The birthstone for May is the Emerald. Ancient history says emeralds bring good luck and good health. The green of an emerald represents life and springtime. Fine quality emeralds are more valuable than diamonds. Emeralds tend to have tiny cracks or cavities called inclusions. These inclusions are acceptable even in top quality emeralds, but they make the emerald soft and somewhat fragile. For this reason care should be taken when wearing emeralds especially with a ring.  Emerald rings should not be worn everyday.

Examine Your Head

2 May

The head on a ring is the component which holds and secures the stone. Heads can be bezels,Design by Alisa Unger which are the most secure, half bezel, six prong or four prong. Six prong are more secure than four prong because there is more metal covering and protecting the stone. If one prong breaks or wears away on a four prong head, the chances of the losing the stone are very good. A missing prong on a six prong head still keeps the stone in place, but should be replaced as soon as possible. Over time prongs on a ring will wear away, corrode, become brittle or break off. It is important to have your ring checked periodically by your jeweler to examine your head.

4 Tips for Caring for your Pearls

1 Jul

pearl necklace1. Keep pearls away from chemicals found in perfumes, cosmetics, and hair spray which can harm the surface and the luster of the pearls.

2. To clean pearls use a soft cloth moistened with water or a commercial product especially for pearls.

3. Store pearls wrapped in a soft cloth or pouch to protect the pearls from abrasive objects.

4.Pearls are knotted with silk cord between each pearl to protect the nacre (outside covering) and if the silk cord should break all the pearls will not scatter all over. If you wear your pearls often, they should be checked often to make sure the silk cord is still strong and should be reknotted a couple of times a year.
